LCD monitors are obviously more vulnerable to damage than the classic CRT. Even the slightest contact with a sharp object can leave your liquid crystal display damaged.
Fortunately, this is easily fixed. There are two different methods that I have found to work quite well. The first method is a temporary fix and will have to be redone after an amount of time or cleaning the LCD. The second method is more of a permanent fix, but requires more work.
Temporary fix with Vaseline:
- Clean the surface of the LCD with diluted isopropyl alcohol (50/50 with water) with a cloth. No toilet paper and especially not paper towels. These will scratch your screen.
- Fill the crack with Vaseline.
- Gently wipe off the Vaseline outside of the scratch.
- When you are done there should be enough Vaseline to fill the scratch.
Less temporary fix, more work:
- Clean the surface of the LCD with diluted isopropyl alcohol (50/50 with water) with a cloth. No toilet paper and especially not paper towels. These will scratch your screen.
- Apply a bit of auto rubbing compound to the scratch.
- Polish the effected the area with until flat with felt. You should acually have removed the anti-glare coating in the effected area.
- Clean the area.
- Using a piece of paper cut a 5mm hole into the center.
- Use the paper to spray clear lacquer (through the hole) onto the effected area.
- Move the paper as you spray if the scratch is lengthy.
- Let dry according to lacquer instructions and you are done.
I hope that did it for you and if you have any suggestions or improvement to these instructions please leave a comment and I will add it to the post (if it make sense).

While moving equipment, I had a 21″ LCD screen fall onto a desktop speaker, which painted a white line across the screen face 3 inches long.
After a few moments of panic and desperate searches for a way to remove the white mark, I tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I didn’t scrub the screen, just light pressure, and the white mark came off. Magic!

Ravager, thanks for the tip. I have found Mr. Clean will ‘clean’ just about anything. It is almost like a very fine abrasive.

Just out of curiosity, is there a way to RESTORE the anti-glare coating, or at least the APPEARANCE of the anti-glare coating?
I cleaned a (regular CRT) monitor with Windex once (without knowing any better), and noticed that when the monitor is powered off, you can see this 2″ x 3″ “Clean” spot in the middle that has absolutely no anti-glare coating on it. When the monitor is on you can’t see it, but it’s really noticeable when it’s turned off.

Will this method also work on glossy screens, or only the matte finished ones?

TR, I have only tested this on anti-glare LCDs.

After almost having a heart attack when I discovered a big scratch(8-9″) and little dent mark, left by a pen, created by my 3 years old daughter on my 24″ LCD DELL monitor. I decided to go and google a solution and to tell you the truth most solution are very scary. From chemicals to Rain x to scratch off with a blade. I decided to try on my own an eraser from a brand new pencil. Very softly and without putting hardly any pressure at all, using a back and forward motion try to work your way to erase the mark and belive it or not it made the scratch and dent disappeared then using a microfiber cloth, the type to clean eye glasses I finish cleaning the screen.Leaving no blemishes whatsoever I hope this is helpful for somebody. note: an old eraser may be hard and create abrassion.
