EDIT: This seems to be a hoax as confirmed by Gizmodo. My apologies.
Are you running Windows Vista? Chances are you are also sporting a dual core CPU.
Did you know that Vista doesn’t take advantage of more than one core during boot? Go Microsoft!
Fortunately, you can easily change this using the system configuration editor.
1. Open the run box by pressing the Windows button + R.
2. Type ‘msconfig’ in the run box:

3. Click on the Boot tab, then click the Advanced options… button:

4. Click the check box next to Number of Processors and select the total number of cores that you wish to use:

Nice! Let us know how much this decreases your boot time in Windows Vista.

It didn’t work for me. My PC started with a blue screen of death. Had to start Vista in Fail-Safe mode. But I have a beta BIOS version on my A8N-SlI motherboard - so maybe that is the reason.

It works a bit - I only went from one core to two - but the change isn’t that great to make this absolutely necessary. Try changing the maximum memory as well - that seemed to help even more for me at least.

Are you sure, that this option increases performance? AFAIK this option is just supposed to reduce the number of used cpu cores. So if you hav a quad-core-system, you could say /numproc=1 to just use one core (for example to increase stability of programs which have trouble with multicores)

Good tip. But hopefully it will decrease boot time, not increase it

I have only one choice and that’s one processor even though I have a Dual Centrino processor. Do you need to be running the 64bit version to allow this change?

i have Intel Q6600 ( 2.4 Ghz )
w/o this my vista load time = 17-17.5s (2x check)
with this (4) my vista load time = 15-15.5s (2x check) so its work,

total BS - this is for limiting the number of processors in order to only use X processors in the OS…
check your facts…. read up on boot.ini options from xp

Cut my time in half, actually.
June 24th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Well, there is not any evidences that this does not work. In fact, I have read some users reporting boot differences in about 10 seconds or more. But you have to change to exactly the amount of processors that you have. Changing the number to more processors them what you have does not do anything and probably could cause problems.

Tried this with Vista on HP DV2000. Didn’t work. Boots at same speed duo core or single core.
June 28th, 2008 at 4:52 am
Did nothing for me. Change to 2 cores (I don’t believe the default is not to use 2 cores btw).
Before change: boot time 1:40
After change: boot time 1:40
So nothing. Just a major waste of time. Couldn’t the poster verify it before making wild claims? He’s not even pretending to show his own results. Thanks for wasting my time…
