360desktop just launched the public beta in conjunction with the 4th of July. If you haven’t heard about 360desktop, here is a quick overview from the site:
360desktop is a free and safe software download, that transforms your standard Windows® desktop into a 360-degree panoramic workspace, giving you many times more desktop space.
Quick video demo:
30desktop runs on Windows XP and Vista. Download the public beta from the 360desktop site. Don’t forget to let us know what you think.
I am currently giving it a spin and I can tell you this much - it don’t do doodoo next to compiz-fusion on Linux.

Thanks so much for giving 360desktop a spin, we hope you like it and come back to visit us as we evolve. Btw, the compiz-fusion video was great! We really enjoy seeing different products made for different markets; especially ones that come from talented people as we appreciate the effort that goes into developing this stuff. Let’s hope we can doodoo it for you in the future. :)

Hi Shane, thanks heaps for the feedback. I agree, compizfusion is a brilliant product. We’ve tried to add a couple of other angles to 360esktop - the ability to take the pieces of the web that you like and put them right on your desktop. ie, grab any web widget, youtube video, etc or web clip any part of any web page, and turn them into desktop widgets. Also coming soon, is the online authoring and gallery, where anyone can create and share their own 360’s. Thanks Evan CEO - 360desktop.

Sounds great. Looking forward to what the future stores for 360desktop.
BTW it seems that 360desktop does not support keyboard shortcuts - only mouse gestures. Is there any plans for keyboard shortcuts in the future?
I was looking for documentation, but the link here is dead:

At the moment nav is by QuickNav slider, edge of screen nudge, mouse scroll wheel.
We do have the beginnings of keyboard shortcuts with Windows-> (for right pan) and Win-< for left pan.
At the moment this keyboard shortcut is a “screen width pan” and “snaps” rather than gracefully pans. The graceful pan is implemented but had XP problems so we pulled it from release - look for it in about a week or so.
Additional short-cuts to come, will likely include the add widget function.
A couple of things you may not have noticed:
(i) pan-to-active : when you have a number of different apps/window opena nd spread around teh 360, clicking on the app in the task bar, makes the desktop pan into position for the app
btw - what did you think of the 4th july 360? While we’re Australians, we thought a 4th July theme might be popular.
Thanks again for your feedback.

I don’t necessarily enjoy a 4th theme on my PC, but it was festive none-the-less.
And personally Evan, I like the snap scroll better than the graceful. It is easier to return to ’spots’ previously visited.

dude… this is crap…
so to get multi workspaces i also get.. one of my favorite words.. “monetize..”
i need money just as much as the next guy.. but please… it’s a feature to have “superman get a standard banner” whooohoo..
like there isn’t enough advertising already.. i’ll also get it at my desktop!?
dont get me wrong.. i like the ideia.. the concept..
videos running at the desktop… active feeds dynamically, it sounds beautifull..
but as soon as i saw that pepsi truck in the back… i just felt sick..
i really hope ppl can build their workspaces without having to endure another wave of marketing and advertising..

hi jpcqa, re the desktop ads - I agree, no one wants unexpected ads on their desktop. (in our defence, the video is a pre-release presentation, not final.) If you, a designer, etc create a 360, you’ll never see ads. But, we’ll have partners who create branded 360’s and they may do clever things like superman. If you want a branded 360, then you’ll know it before you download. If you don’t like the brand, then download another 360. We estimate less than 0.5% of the 360’s will be sponsored. The rest of them, no ads. We know that if anything we do annoys you, then you’ll uninstall the app - and that’s bad for us. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Evan, CEO - 360desktop
