I know, you have probably been through this before and it’s unoriginal, but I would like to know more about the readers here at Hackosis and thought this would be a great way to get started.

Show us your desktop and tell us a little about what is going on inside that virtual masterpiece of yours.

I am running Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna on my home PC with the desktop a bit customized. Gdesklets make up the widgets. ‘New York’ wallpaper was downloaded from InterfaceLIFT. The icon set is called CrashBit.

So if you have a spare minute, upload a screen shot of your desktop and tell us a bit about what’s happening. I am sure everyone would love to see it.

Foundstone, a division of McAfee, offers over 50 unique network security tools for free. These are not new by any means, but hopefully you can get some use of them.

Some highlights include:

Enjoy these and as stated on the site, some antivirus programs may throw a red flag, but don’t be alarmed. Be sure to check out the videos explaining the Hacme applications.

NOTE: It seems the foundstone.com site is no longer being updated. You can keep tabs on the developers of these applications at the McAfee Avert Labs blog.

What free tools do you use for penetration testing and network security?

VozMe

Convert Text To Speech online at vozMe. Ironically, the voice sounds just like the English male from Festival.

vozMe lets you enter English text and outputs the speech in MP3 format. This wouldn’t be difficult on a web server with a perl script. I feel a tutorial coming on.

If you have been following my Vyatta posts, you might be interested in a humorous collection of parody advertisements that the Vyatta team and users have created.

The ad below is my favorite. The first time I told someone about Vyatta, they thought I actually said ‘Viagra’.

Vyatta - Viagra

Be sure to look at the rest of the parody ads.

Lifehacker

This post is late. I have busier than a a one-armed paperhanger with a case of the hives lately, but I would like to thank Lifehacker.com for the featured article linking to Appupdater: Apt-Get for Windows.

This is big news for a small time blog like Hackosis.com and maybe it will continue in the future. ;)

OK, enough jibber jabber for now about all the geeky stuff. Readers, show/tell me what is on your desk at this very moment. Take a picture and send it with a description of the items to shane (AT) hackosis DOT com and I will post what was sent on Wednesday, December 19th. If you like Hackosis, get your Internet friends to join in, you might learn something about them that you didn’t know.

I look forward to seeing what everyone sends. Again, I will post these Wednesday, December 19th.
